Where Does Shell Cordovan Leather Come From

Horse butt. I'm not kidding! The shell is a membrane in the middle of two epidermis layers in the rear portion of a horse butt. The hindquarter portion of the hide used for shell cordovan begins at around 24″ from the tail and extends 24-28″ on either side of the horse. The exact size varies depending on the size of the horse.

People often think of horses as delicate and precious and not meant to be killed in any way except a few places in the world that actually consume horse meat. Some people think horses are killed inhumanely and only for the horse butt among other things but that's so far from the truth. Most of the tanneries that deal with shell cordovan leather get the hides from sources that don't just kill horses but from horses that die of natural causes or in the scarce regions of the world that consume horse meat in their diets. The horse hides are a byproduct in each of these situations and the horses are not killed just for the hides.
